At Degler Waste Services, we recognized a growing demand for a local sewage treatment plant that was capable of handling both residential septage and commercial grease trap waste. Prior to our facility opening in 2007, the grease trap waste we collected from restaurants, hospitals, hotels, and other commercial facilities in the Walterboro, South Carolina area had to be hauled more than two hours away for disposal because the nearby municipal treatment facilities could not accept it. The process was incredibly time and resource-consuming, with our trucks hauling roughly 7,000 gallons per trip. It was a process that simply couldn’t be sustained.
To address this challenge and make a positive change for our community, we partnered with the local wastewater authority to establish a privately operated pre-treatment wastewater plant. The facility was designed to help reduce grease levels entering the local sewer system and ease the burden on our wastewater infrastructure. Since we opened our private treatment plant in 2007, it’s played an essential role in our daily operations.
The treatment plant is designed for speed and efficiency, with the ability to process waste in less than an hour. The waste we collect from residential and commercial properties is treated in holding tanks using lime as a neutralizing agent before polymer is introduced. As the treatment progresses, liquid waste is separated from solid waste, which allows the water to be removed while solids remain for further handling.
