Although there is a dizzyingly large variety of places where portable toilets are necessary for the continued safety and sanitation of the area, these can usually be broken down into three broad categories.

- Outdoor venues. Whether it is a temporary music festival, a campground open around the year, a sporting event, or even a wedding, portable toilets are an essential consideration for any event planner. If you plan on having any number of people all together in an outdoor space with no permanent bathrooms easily accessible by attendees, you will need to provide portable toilets.
- Construction sites. Similarly, construction sites often do not have bathrooms readily available to them, even if the building the workers are constructing will eventually have bathrooms. During this time, portable toilets are essential for ease and comfort for the construction workers on the job. Ensuring there are portable toilets also helps the job continue uninterrupted, since workers won’t be leaving the job site in search of restrooms throughout the day.
- Disaster zones. Although these sometimes can’t be planned for, having portable toilets on hand after a natural or man-made disaster can save lives by protecting local water sources from being contaminated by untreated waste and ensuring that, hazardous as the disaster zone already is, people are not being forced to create even more hazards along the way.
There are many reasons that regular indoor toilets may not be available for people, whether it’s due to a disaster or because they have been gathered together in an outdoor space for work or pleasure. Whatever the reason, portable toilets are there to fill in the gaps until those people can go home.
